DIET FOR THE HEADACHE SUFFERER
Read labels and ask questions when eating out. Tyramine content can vary among brand names available on the market because of preparation, processing or storage. Tenderizers, MSG, nitrate, or nitrite compounds are likely to be provoking agents.
Beverages
- Foods Allowed
- Decaffeineted coffee, fruit juices, club soda, decaffeinated colas (7-up, ginger ale). Alcholoic beverages least likely to trigger headaches include Haute Sauterne, Riesling, vodka, Seagram's VO, Cutty Sark. Limit wine, port wine, and distilled spirits to 4 ounces or less.
- Foods to Avoid
- Limit Caffeine sources to 8 ounces daily: coffee, tea, cola type soday; chocolate milk, cocoa. Alcoholic beverages to avoid: ale, beer, chianti, sherry, burgundy, vermouth.
Meat, Fish, Poultry
- Foods Allowed
- Fresh prepared meats, fish, poultry and eggs
- Foods to Avoid
- Aged, canned, cured, or processed meats, canned or aged ham, pickeled herring, salted dried fish, chicken liver, aged game, hot dogs, sausages (no nitrates or nitrites); bologna, salami, pepporoni, summer sausage; any meat prepared with meat tenderizers, soy sauce, or yeast extracts.
Dairy
- Foods Allowed
- Mill: homoginized, 2% or skim, Cheese: American, cottage, gouda, farmer, ricotta, cream cheese, velveeta, yogurt. Limit sour cream to _ cup.
- Foods to Avoid
- Aged, mature cheese: blue, boursault, brick, brie types, camembert types, cheddar, swiss, roquefort, stilton, mozzarella, parmesan, provolone, romano, emmentaler.
Bread/Cereals/Starchy Vegetables
- Foods Allowed
- Commercial breads. All hot and dry cereals. White potato, sweet potato, rice and pasta.
- Foods to Avoid
- Sourdough bread, breads and crackers containing cheese or chocolate.
Vegetables
- Foods Allowed
- All except those to avoid. Use with caution in preperation: navey beans, pinto beans.
- Food to Avoid
- Broad beans, italian beans, lima, lentils, snow peas, fava beans, soy beans and sauerkraut.
Fruit
- Foods Allowed

- Foods to Avoid
- Limit to _ cup daily: avacado, bannan, citrus, figs, raisins,papaya, passion fruit, red plums, and raspberries.
Soups

- Cream soups made from foods allowed. Homemade broths.

- Canned soups, soup cubes, bouillon cubes, soup bases with autolyzed yeast or monosodium glutamate (MSG). Read Lables.

- Fruits, sherberts, ice cream, cakes, cookies, and jell-o
- Foods to Avoid
- Use with caution products conaining chocolate.
Sweets and Hard Candy
- Food Allowed
- Sugar, jelly, jam, honey and syrup.
- Food to Avoid
- Chocolate candies, licorice, molasses and chocolate syrup
Miscellaneous
- Foods Allowed
- Salt in moderation, vinigars and commercial salad dressing in small amounts. Please read all labels carefully on snack foods.
- Foods to Avoid
- Read lables carefully. Avoid commercial frozen t.v. dinners and pizza with cheese. Nuts and seeds, peanuts, peanut butter, pumpkin and sesame seeds. Any pickeled, preserved, or marinated foods should be avoided. Again, please read all lables carefully.
